The History of the Royal Palace Belgrade
The Royal Palace, completed in 1929, was commissioned by King Alexander I of Yugoslavia. Built in the Serbian-Byzantine style, it blends architectural elegance with national pride. During the time of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, this palace was the political and cultural heart of the nation. It was here that kings met with foreign dignitaries, held state ceremonies, and made decisions that shaped the country’s future.
However, after World War II and the rise of the communist government, the monarchy was abolished and the palace was seized by the state. The royal family lived in exile for decades. In 2001, Crown Prince Alexander III Karađorđević and his family were finally allowed to return to Serbia, reclaiming their role as guardians of the nation’s history and traditions.
Today, the Royal Palace is both a private residence and a cultural monument. While the royal family has no political power, they play an important role in promoting Serbian heritage and supporting charitable causes.
